As a See also:battalion See also:commander he distinguished himself at the Mexican See also:War, at Palo See also:Alto, Resaca, See also:Monterey and Churubusco. He commanded the Red See also:River expedition of 1856, and served under See also:Albert See also:Sidney See also:Johnston in See also:Utah (1857–1860). On the outbreak of the See also:Civil War in 1861 he accepted a See also:commission as brigadier-See also:general of See also:Union See also:volunteers, and found himself under the command of See also:Grant, who had been his See also:pupil at West Point. This difficult situation was made easy by Smith's See also:loyalty to his See also:young See also:chief, and the old soldier led his See also:division of raw volunteers with success at Fort See also:Donelson. His ripe experience, dignity, and unselfish See also:character made him Grant's mainstay in the See also:early days. He went up the See also:Tennessee with the first expedition, but at See also:Savannah, Tennessee, met with a serious See also:accident. His See also:senior brigadier led his division at the See also:battle of See also:Shiloh and he died on See also:April 25, 1862. The early See also:close of his career in high command deprived the Union See also:army of one of its best leaders, and his See also:absence was nowhere more See also:felt than on the battlefield of Shiloh, where the Federals paid heavily for the inexperience of their generals. A See also:month before his See also:death he had been made See also:major-general of volunteers.
