BATTALION , a unit of military organization consisting of four or more companies of See also:

infantry. The See also:term is used in nearly every See also:army, and is derived through Fr. from It. battaglionc, Med. See also:Lat. battalia (see See also:BATTLE). " Battalion "in the 16th and 17th centuries implied a unit of infantry forming See also:part of the See also:line:of battle, but at first meant an unusually large batlalia or a single large See also:body of men formed of several battalias. In the See also:British See also:regular service the intantry battalion is commanded by a lieut.-See also:colonel, who is assisted by an See also:adjutant, and consists at See also:war strength of about s000 bayonets in eight companies. See also:Engineers, See also:train, certain kinds of See also:artillery, and more rarely See also:cavalry are also organized in battalions in some countries.
