His See also:interest in See also:geography had See also:early See also:developed, and his first important See also:work was the See also:National See also:Atlas of See also:general geography, which gained for him in 1843 the See also:appointment of Geographer-Royal for See also:Scotland. Johnston was the first to bring the study of See also:physical geography into competent See also:notice in See also:England. His See also:attention had been called to the subject by See also:Humboldt; and after years of labour he published his magnificent Physical Atlas in 1848, followed by a second and enlarged edition in 1856. This, by means of maps with descriptive letterpress, illustrates the See also:geology, See also:hydrography, See also:meteorology, See also:botany, See also:zoology, and See also:ethnology of the globe. The See also:rest of Johnston's See also:life was devoted to geography, his later years to its educational aspects especially. His services were recognized by the leading scientific See also:societies of See also:Europe and See also:America. He died at See also:Ben Rhydding, See also:Yorkshire, on the 9th of See also:July 1871. Johnston published a See also:Dictionary of Geography in 185o, with many later See also:editions; The Royal Atlas of See also:Modern Geography, begun in 1855; an atlas of military geography to accompany See also:Alison's See also:History of Europe in 1848 seq.; and a variety of other atlases and maps for educational or scientific purposes. His son of the same name (1844-1879) was also theauthor of various See also:geographical See also:works and papers; in 1873-1875 he was geographer to a See also:commission for the survey of See also:Paraguay; and he died in See also:Africa while leading the Royal Geographical Society's expedition to See also:Lake See also:Nyasa.
