He was a descendant of See also:Matthew Grant, a Scotchman, who settled in See also:Dorchester, See also:Massachusetts, in 163o. His earlier years were spent in helping his See also:father, See also:Jesse R. Grant, upon his See also:farm in Ohio. In 1839 he was appointed to a See also:place in the military See also:academy at See also:West Point, and it was then that his name assumed the See also:form by which it is generally known. He was christened Hiram, after an ancestor, with Ulysses for a See also:middle name. As he was usually called by his middle name, the congressman who recommended him for West Point supposed it to be his first name, and added thereto the name of his See also:mother's See also:family, Simpson. Grant was the best horseman of his class, and took a respectable place in See also:mathematics, but at his See also:graduation in 1843 he only ranked twenty-first in a class of See also:thirty-nine. In See also:September 1845 he went with his See also:regiment to join the forces of See also:General See also:Taylor in See also:Mexico; there he took See also:part in the battles of Palo See also:Alto, Resaca de la See also:Palma and See also:Monterey, and, after his See also:transfer to General See also:Scott's See also:army, which he joined in See also:March 1847, served at See also:Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, Churubusco, Molino del Rey and at the storming of Chapultepec. He was breveted first See also:lieutenant for gallantry at Molino del Rey and See also:captain for gallantry at Chapultepec. In See also:August 1848, after the See also:close of the See also:war, he married Julia T. Dent (1826-1902), and was for a while stationed in See also:California and See also:Oregon, but in 1854 he resigned his See also:commission.
