His See also:father, See also:John Grant, was a See also:captain in the 92nd See also:Gordon Highlanders and had served through the See also:Peninsular See also:War. For several years James Grant was in See also:Newfoundland with his father, but in 1839 he returned to See also:England, and entered the 62nd See also:Foot as an See also:ensign. In 1843 he resigned his See also:commission and devoted himself to See also:writing, first magazinearticles, but soon a profusion of novels, full of vivacity and incident, and dealing mainly with military scenes and characters. His best stories, perhaps, were The See also:Romance of War (his first, 1845), See also:Bothwell (1851), See also:Frank See also:Hilton; or, The See also:Queen's Own (1855), The Phantom See also:Regiment and Harry See also:Ogilvie (1856), See also:Lucy See also:Arden (1858), The See also:- WHITE

He died on the 5th of May 1887.
