In ',Soo he was placed with the engraver J. R. See also:Smith, and about the same See also:time began studying in the Royal See also:Academy school. He first exhibited in this institution in 1803, sending a " See also:Group of Banditti "; and he soon established a reputation for choice of subject, and qualities of See also:design and See also:colour See also:superior to the See also:great See also:mass of his contemporaries. He made a tour in See also:Italy with See also:Thomas See also:Phillips, the portrait-painter. In 1813, having exhibited " See also:Miranda and See also:Ferdinand with the Logs of See also:Wood," he was elected an See also:associate of the Academy, and in 1820 a full academician, his diploma-picture representing " See also:Ganymede." In 1823 he produced " See also:Christ crowned with Thorns," a large and important See also:work, subsequently bought out of the See also:Chantrey Fund; this may be regarded as his See also:master-piece. In 1827 he succeeded See also:Henry See also:Thomson as keeper of the Academy. He died in See also:London on the 3oth of See also:December 1839. Some of his best pictures remained on his hands at his decease—such as the " See also:Angel releasing See also:Peter from See also:Prison " (See also:life-See also:size), painted in 1831, " Una with the See also:Lion entering Corceca's See also:Cave " (1832), the " See also:Murder of the Innocents," his last exhibited work (1838), " See also:Comus," and " See also:Amphitrite." The See also:National See also:Gallery now owns Edith finding the See also:Body of Harold " (1834), " See also:Cupid Disarmed," " Rebecca and See also:Abraham's Servant " (182g), " Nature blowing Bubbles for her See also:Children " (1821), and " See also:Sir Calepine rescuing See also:Serena " (from the Facrie See also:Queen) (1831). In the National Portrait Gallery is his likeness of See also:John See also:Keats, with whom he was acquainted. In a great school or See also:period Hilton could not See also:count as more than a respectable subordinate; but in the See also:British school of the earlier See also:part of the 19th See also:century he had sufficient See also:elevation of aim and width of attainment to stand conspicuous.
