Wide lands in this district were held in the See also:time of See also:Edward the See also:Confessor by Alwin, whose son Thurkill of ,See also:Warwick, or " of Arden," founded the See also:family of the Warwickshire Ardens who in See also:Queen See also:Elizabeth's time still held several of the manors ascribed to Thurkill in Domesday. See also:Shakespeare, whose See also:mother See also:Mary Arden claimed to be of this family, knew the district well, living as he did at See also:Stratford; and its natural characteristics, then still unchanged, inspired his pictures of forest See also:life in As You Like It. The name of the Forest of Arden, besides remaining a convenient designation of a well-marked See also:physical See also:area, is preserved in such See also:place-names as See also:Henley-in-Arden and See also:Hampton-in-Arden.
