WILLIAM (1765-1836) , See also:English See also:man of letters, son of a See also:Norwich manufacturer, was See also:born in that See also:city on the 7th of See also:November 1765. He belonged to the Unitarian community, and went to a school kept at See also:Palgrave, See also:Suffolk, by Rochemont See also:Barbauld, See also:husband of See also:Anna Letitia Barbauld, where See also:Frank See also:Sayers (1763-1817) was among his schoolmates. He travelled on the See also:Continent for some years to perfect himself in See also:foreign See also:languages. William Taylor and his See also:father were both in sympathy with the See also:French Revolution, and belonged to a " revolution society " at Norwich. In 1791 the disturbed See also:condition of affairs induced the See also:elder Taylor to See also:wind up his business, and from this See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)

time William devoted himself to letters. He was an enthusiast for See also:German See also:poetry, and did See also:great service to English literature by See also:translations of See also:Burger's Lenore (1790, printed 1796), of See also:Lessing's Nathan the See also:Wise (1790, printed 1805), of See also:Goethe's Iphigenia in Tauris (1790, printed 1793), and of four of See also:Wieland's Dialogues of the Gods (1795). He was a prolific writer of See also:review articles, in which his knowledge of foreign literature served as a useful See also:standard of See also:criticism. Much of this material was made use of in his most important See also:work, his Historic Survey of German Poetry (3 vols., 1828-30). He also edited the See also:works of his friend Sayers with a memoir (1823). He died at Norwich on the 5th of See also:March 1836.
