SAYERS, TOM (1826–1865) , See also:English pugilist, was See also:born at See also:Brighton on the 25th of May 1826. By See also:trade a bricklayer, he began his career as a See also:prize fighter in 1849 and won See also:battle after battle, his single defeat being at the hands of Nat See also:Langham in See also:October 1853. In 1857 he gained the championship. His fight with the See also:American, See also:John C. Heenan, the Benicia Boy, a much heavier See also:man than himself, is perhaps the most famous in the See also:history of the English prize See also:ring. It took See also:place at See also:Farnborough on the 17th of See also:April 186o and lasted two See also:hours and six minutes, See also:thirty-seven rounds being fought. After Sayers's right See also:arm had been injured the See also:crowd pressed into the ring and the fight was declared a draw. £3000 was raised by public subscription for Sayers, who withdrew from the ring and died on the 8th of See also:November 1865. The See also:champion was 5 ft. 82 in. in height and his fighting See also:weight was under 11 See also:stone. An See also:account of the fight between Sayers and Heenan is given by See also:Frederick Locker-Lampson in My Confidences (1896).
