Apparently he advocated the cause of See also:Lady Jane See also:Grey, for on the 25th .of See also:July 1553, only six days after See also:Mary's See also:proclamation as See also:queen, he was committed to the custody of the See also:sheriff of See also:Essex. He was released not See also:long afterwards, and with the support of his parishioners offered strenuous resistance to the restoration of the See also:Mass. He was consequently imprisoned in the See also:King's See also:Bench See also:prison on the 26th of See also:March 1554. The sturdy Protestantism of Taylor and his See also:flock, who seem to have caused various commotions, marked him out for the See also:special enmity of Mary's See also:government; and he was one of the first to suffer when in See also:January 1555 See also:parliament had once more given the clerical courts See also:liberty of See also:jurisdiction. He was sentenced on the 22nd, excommunicated on the 29th, degraded by See also:Bonner on the 4th of See also:February, and burnt on the 9th at Aldham See also:Common near Hadleigh. His blameless See also:character had made a See also:great impression on his See also:age, and he was commemorated in many popular See also:ballads. He was regarded as the ideal of a Protestant See also:parish See also:priest; he was married and had nine See also:children.
