He studied See also:medicine in 1830-1833 and began to practise, and in 1833 was licensed as a preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was pastor of the See also:Liberty See also:Street Church of See also:Pittsburg in 1835, and of a church at See also:Williams-See also:port (now See also:Monongahela) in 1836. In 1837 he was ordained See also:elder and was appointed See also:professor of natural See also:science in See also:Allegheny See also:College, See also:Meadville, in which See also:Madison College had been merged in 1833; and in 1838 he was elected professor and immediately afterwards See also:president of the newly established See also:Indiana See also:Asbury (now De Pauw) University, See also:Greencastle, Indiana, to which he went in 1839; this position he held until 1848. He was editor of the Western See also:Christian See also:Advocate, which he made a strong See also:temperance and See also:anti-See also:slavery See also:organ, from 1848 to 1852. He was elected a bishop in May 1852, and in 1857, with Dr See also:McClintock, visited See also:Great See also:Britain as a delegate to the See also:British Wesleyan See also:Conference, and travelled in the See also:Holy See also:Land. He was an intimate and trusted friend of President See also:Lincoln, who considered his See also:advice of great value, and at whose See also:grave in See also:Springfield he spoke the last words.
