MONONGAHELA , a See also:

city of See also:Washington See also:county, See also:Pennsylvania, U.S.A., on the Monongahela See also:river, 31 M. by See also:rail S. of See also:Pittsburg. Pop. (1890), 4096; (1900), 5173 (7ir See also:foreign-See also:born, and 345 negroes); (1910) 7598. It is served by the Pennsylvania and the Pittsburg & See also:Lake See also:Erie See also:railways, and by electric railways to Pittsburg and Washington, Pa: Monongahela is in a See also:coal region, and the See also:mining of coal is its See also:principal See also:industry. It was laid out as a See also:town in 1792 by See also:Joseph See also:Parkinson, and named by him See also:Williamsport; but it was commonly known as Parkinson's See also:Ferry until 1833, when it was incorporated as a See also:borough. Four years later the See also:present name was adopted, and in 1873 Monongahela was chartered as a city. It was here that the See also:Whisky Insurrection See also:convention met on the 14th of See also:August 1794.
