In a second expedition, made in the " Serchthrift " in 1556, he discovered Kara Strait, between Novaya Zemlya and See also:Vaygach See also:island. In 156o he was in See also:charge of another expedition to See also:Russia, and, probably in 1558, he also made a voyage to See also:Spain. At the beginning of 1563 he was appointed chief pilot and one of the four masters of the See also:queen's ships in the See also:Medway, and in this See also:- OFFICE (from Lat. officium, " duty," " service," a shortened form of opifacium, from facere, " to do," and either the stem of opes, " wealth," " aid," or opus, " work ")
office he spent the See also:rest of his See also:life. He died on the 12th of See also:July 1584, and was buried at See also:Chatham. His son, See also:Christopher Borough, wrote a description of a trading expedition made in 1579–1581 from the White Sea to the See also:Caspian and back.

WILLIAM BOROUGH, born in 1536, also at Northam, served as an See also:ordinary See also:seaman in the " Edward Bonaventure " on her voyage to Russia in 1553, and subsequently made many voyages to St Nicholas. Later he transferred his services from the See also:merchant adventurers to the See also:crown. As See also:commander of the " See also:Lion " he accompanied Sir See also:Francis See also:Drake in his See also:Cadiz expedition of 1587, but he got himself into trouble by presuming to disagree with his chief concerning the See also:wisdom of the attack on See also:Lagos. He died in 1599.
He was the author of A Discourse of the Variation of the Comps, or Magneticall See also:Needle (1581), and some of the charts he made are preserved at the See also:British Museum and See also:Hatfield.
