BONNEVAL, See also:CLAUDE See also:ALEXANDRE, See also:COMTE DE (1675—1747) , See also:French adventurer, known also as AIIMED See also:PASHA, was the descendant of an old See also:family of See also:Limousin. He was See also:born on the 14th of See also:July 1675, and at the See also:age of thirteen joined the Royal Marine See also:Corps. After three years he entered the See also:army, in which he See also:rose to the command of a See also:regiment. He served in the See also:Italian See also:campaigns under See also:Catinat, See also:Villeroi and See also:Vendome, and in the See also:Netherlands under See also:Luxemburg, giving proofs of indomitable courage and See also:great military ability. His insolent bearing towards the See also:minister of See also:war was made See also:matter for a See also:court-See also:martial (1704). He was condemned to See also:death, but saved himself by See also:flight to See also:Germany. Through the See also:influence of See also:Prince See also:Eugene he obtained a See also:general's command in the See also:Austrian army, and fought with great bravery and distinction against See also:France, and afterwards against See also:Turkey. He was See also:present at See also:Malplaquet, and was severely wounded at See also:Peterwardein. The proceedings against him in France were then allowed to drop, and he visited See also:Paris, and married a daughter of See also:Marshal de See also:Biron. He returned, however, after a See also:short See also:time to the Austrian army, and fought with distinction at See also:Belgrade. He might now have risen to the highest See also:rank, had he not made himself disagreeable to Prince Eugene, who sent him as See also:master of the See also:ordnance to the See also:Low Countries. There his ungovernable See also:temper led him into a See also:quarrel with the See also:marquis de See also:Prie, Eugene's See also:deputy See also:governor in the Netherlands, who answered his See also:challenge by placing him in confinement.

A court-martial was again held upon him, and he was condemned to death; but the See also:

emperor commuted the See also:sentence to one See also:year's imprisonment and banishment. Bonneval, soon after his See also:release, offered his services to the See also:Turkish See also:government, professed the See also:Mahommedan faith, and took the name of Ahmed. He was made a pasha, and appointed to organize and command the See also:artillery. He rendered valuable services to the See also:sultan in his war with See also:Russia, and with the famous See also:Nadir Shah. As a See also:reward he received the governorship of See also:Chios, but he soon See also:fell under the suspicion of the See also:Porte, and was banished for a time to the shores of the See also:Black See also:Sea. He was meditating a return to See also:Europe and See also:Christianity when he died at See also:Constantinople on the 23rd of See also:March 1747. The See also:Memoirs published under his name are See also:spurious. See Prince de Ligne, Memoire sur le comte de Bonneval (Paris, 1817) ; and A. Vandal, Le Pacha Bonneval (Paris, 1885).
