He served with See also:great See also:credit in the See also:campaigns of 1676-1678 in See also:Flanders, was employed against the Vaudois in 1686, and after taking See also:part in the siege of Philipsburg at the opening of the See also:War of the See also:League of See also:Augsburg, he was appointed to command the See also:French troops in the See also:south-eastern See also:theatre of war. In 1690 he conquered See also:Savoy, and in 1691 See also:Nice; the See also:battle of Staffarda, won by him over the See also:duke of Savoy in 1690, and tliat of Marsaglia in 1693, were amongst the greatest victories of the See also:time. In 1696 Catinat forced the duke to make an See also:alliance with France. He had in 1693 been made a marshal of France. At the be-ginning of the war of the See also:Spanish See also:Succession, Catinat was placed in See also:charge of operations in See also:Italy, but he was much hampered by the orders of the French See also:court and the weakness of the forces for their task. He suffered a See also:reverse at See also:Carpi (1701) and was soon afterwards superseded by Villeroy, to whom he acted as secondin-command during the See also:campaign of Chiari.
