EUGENE , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of See also:Lane county, See also:Oregon, U.S.A., on the Willamette See also:river, at the See also:head of See also:navigation, about 125 M. S. of See also:Portland. Pop. (1900) 3236, of whom 237 were See also:foreign-See also:born; (19ro Federal See also:census) 9009. Eugene is served by the See also:Southern Pacific railroad ' and by interurban electric railway. It is situated on the edge of a broad and fertile See also:prairie, at the See also:foot of a See also:ridge of See also:low hills and within view of the peaks of the See also:Coast Range; the streets are pleasantly shaded with Oregon maples. The city is most widely known as the seat of the University of Oregon. This institution, opened in 1876 and having 95 instructors and 734 students in 1907-1908, occupies eight buildings on a grassy slope along the river See also:bank, and embraces a See also:college of literature, See also:science and the arts, a college of See also:engineering, a See also:graduate school, and (at Portland) a school of See also:law and a school of See also:medicine. In the city is the Eugene Divinity School of the Disciples of See also:Christ, opened in 1895. Eugene is the commercial centie of an extensive agricultural See also:district; does a large business 885 in See also:grain, See also:fruit, hops, See also:cattle, See also:wool and See also:lumber; and has various manufactures, including See also:flour, lumber, woollen goods and canned fruit. Eugene was settled in 1854, and was first incorporated in 1864.
