He graduated in 1816 at See also:Hamilton See also:College. In 1821 he came under the See also:influence and teaching of See also:Moses See also:Stuart, the second edition of whose See also:Hebrew See also:Grammar he helped to. prepare for the See also:press in 1823, and through whom he was appointed in the same See also:year instructor 'in Hebrew in See also:Andover See also:Seminary. With Stuart he translated in 1825 the first edition of See also:Winer's Grammar of New Testament See also:Greek; and alone he translated Wahl's See also:Clovis Philologica Novi Testamenti (1825). In 1826–30 he studied in See also:Germany, especially at See also:Halle, under Gesenius, See also:Tholuck and Rodiger, and at See also:Berlin, under See also:Neander. He was See also:professor (extraordinary) of sacred literature and librarian at Andover in 1830–33, resigning because of dangerous epileptic attacks; and in 1831–35 he edited the Biblical Repository, which he founded and carried on very largely by his own contributions, assisted somewhat by his See also:young See also:German wife, See also:Theresa Albertina Luise (1797–1869), the daughter of Professor See also:Ludwig Heinrich von See also:Jakob of Halle, a linguist of considerable ability, and a writer (in her See also:early years under.the See also:pseudonym " Talvi ") of essays and stories. In 1837 he accepted the professorship of Biblical literature in See also:Union Theological Seminary, and See also:left See also:America for three years of study in See also:Palestine and Germany, the See also:fruit of which, his Biblical Researches, published in 1841, brought him the See also:gold See also:medal of the Royal See also:Geographical Society in 1842. A second See also:volume of Researches appeared in 1856. His plans to sum up his important topographical studies in a See also:work on Biblical See also:geography were cut See also:short by See also:cataract in 1861 and by his See also:death in New See also:York See also:City on the 27th of See also:January 1863. A See also:great Biblical scholar and exegete, Robinson must be considered the See also:pioneer and See also:father of Biblical geography—his Biblical Researches, supplemented by the See also:Physical Geography of the See also:Holy See also:Land (1865), were based on careful See also:personal exploration and tempered by a thoroughly See also:critical spirit, which was possibly at times too sceptical of See also:local tradition. Of scarcely less value in their See also:day were his Greek See also:Harmony of the Gospels (1845 and often) and his Greek and See also:English See also:Lexicon of the New Testament (1836; revised 1847 and 1850). He established in 1843 and edited for some years the Bibliotheca Sacra (in which the Biblical Repository was merged in 1852), for which he wrote until 1855.
