At a very See also:early See also:age he became a See also:monk and See also:abbot of See also:Paisley, and after studying in See also:Paris he returned to See also:Scotland, where he soon See also:rose to a position of See also:power and See also:influence under his See also:half-See also:brother, the See also:regent Arran. He was made keeper of the privy See also:seal in 1543 and See also:bishop of See also:Dunkeld two years later; in 1546 he followed See also:David See also:Beaton as See also:archbishop of St See also:Andrews, and about the same See also:time he became treasurer of the See also:kingdom. He made vigorous efforts to stay the growth of Protestantism, but with one or two exceptions " persecution was not the policy of Archbishop Hamilton," and in the interests of the See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:religion a See also:catechism called Hamilton's Catechism (published with an introduction by T. G. See also:Law in 1884) was See also:drawn up and printed, possibly at his instigation. Having incurred the displeasure of the Protestants, now the dominant party in Scotland, the archbishop was imprisoned in 1563. After his See also:release he was an active See also:partisan of See also:Mary See also:queen of Scots; he baptized the See also:infant James, afterwards See also:King James VI., and pronounced the See also:divorce of the queen from See also:Bothwell. He was See also:present at the See also:battle of Langside, and some time later took See also:refuge in See also:Dumbarton See also:Castle. Here he was seized, and on the See also:charge of being concerned in the murders of See also:Lord See also:Darnley and the regent See also:Murray he was tried, and hanged on the 6th of See also:April 1571. The archbishop had three See also:children by his See also:mistress, Grizzel See also:Sempill.
