His See also:father, a Quaker, was a leading New See also:York See also:merchant. At the See also:age of fourteen he was placed in his father's See also:office, but he ran away to a school in See also:Burlington, New See also:Jersey. He was brought back to New York, but his arguments against a commercial career prevailed, and he was allowed to study See also:law. On being called to the See also:bar he practised successfully in New York. In 1783 he was able to retire, and in 1784 he See also:left See also:America for See also:England. Settling at Holgate, near York, he devoted the See also:rest of his See also:life to See also:literary pursuits. His first See also:book was See also:Power of See also:Religion on the Mind (1787). In 1795 he issued his See also:Grammar of the See also:English See also:Language. This was followed, among other analogous See also:works, by English Exercises, and the English Reader. These books passed through several See also:editions, and the Grammar was the See also:standard textbook for fifty years throughout England and America. Lindley Murray died on the 16th of See also:January 1826.
