William Hamilton, See also:Bart., was See also:born in 1789. He was educated at See also:Glasgow University, where he made a See also:close friend of See also:Michael See also:Scott, the author of Tom Cringle's See also:Log. He entered the See also:army in 181o, and served through-out the See also:Peninsular and See also:American See also:campaigns, but continued to cultivate his See also:literary tastes. On the conclusion of See also:peace he withdrew, with the See also:rank of See also:captain, from active service. He contributed both See also:prose and See also:verse to See also:Blackwood's See also:Magazine, in which appeared his vigorous and popular military novel, See also:Cyril See also:Thornton (1827). His See also:Annals of the Peninsular See also:Campaign, published originally in 1829, and republished in 1849 with additions by See also:Frederick Hardman, is written with See also:great clearness and impartiality. His only other See also:work, Men and See also:Manners in See also:America, published originally in 1833, is somewhat coloured by See also:British See also:prejudice, and by the author's aristocratic dislike of a See also:democracy. Hamilton died at See also:Pisa on the 7th of See also:December 1842.
