He resided mainly at another See also:village in the same neighbourhood, See also:Car See also:Colston, where he practised as a physician and where he lived the See also:life of a See also:country See also:gentleman. He took very little See also:part in the See also:Civil See also:War, although his sympathies were with the royalists, but as a See also:magistrate he was very active in taking proceedings against the See also:Quakers. In 1667 Thoroton, aided by a See also:band of helpers, began. to See also:work upon his elaborate Antiquities of Nottinghamshire. This was published in See also:London in 1677; it was dedicated to See also:Gilbert See also:Sheldon, See also:archbishop of See also:Canterbury, and was illustrated by engravings by W. See also:Hollar. In 1797 a new edition of the Antiquities was published by See also:John Throsby (1740-1803), who added an additional See also:volume. In 1897 the Thoroton Society was founded in See also:honour of the antiquarian, its See also:object being to promote the study of the See also:history and antiquities of Nottinghamshire. Under its auspices See also:annual volumes of Transactions and several volumes of Records have been published and much valuable work has been done. A See also:brass tablet to the memory of Thoroton has been placed in Car Colston See also:church. See J. T.
