He was ordained in 1622 and was appointed See also:chaplain to See also:Thomas See also:Lord See also:Coventry (1578-1640). Four years later he was elected See also:warden of All Souls' See also:College, Oxford. During the years 1632-1639 he received the livings of See also:Hackney (1633); Oddington, See also:Oxfordshire; Ickford, See also:Buckingham-See also:shire (1636); and Newington, Oxfordshire; besides being a See also:prebendary of See also:Gloucester from 1632. In 1638 he was on a See also:commission appointed to visit Merton College, Oxford. He was intimate with the Royalist leaders, participated in the negotiations for the See also:Uxbridge treaty of 1644, and collected funds for See also:Charles II. in See also:exile. In 1648 he was ejected from All Souls' by See also:order of See also:parliament, and imprisoned for some months, but he regained the wardenship in 1659. In i66o he became See also:bishop of See also:London and See also:master of the See also:Savoy, and the Savoy See also:Conference was held at his lodgings. He was consecrated archbishop of Canter-See also:bury in 1663. He was greatly interested in the welfare of Oxford University, of which he became See also:chancellor in 1667, succeeding See also:Clarendon (1609-1674). The Sheldonian See also:theatre at Oxford was built and endowed at his expense.
