PIONEER , properly a See also:

foot-soldier (Med. See also:Lat. pedo, pedonis, through O. Fr. peonnier, pionnier, cf. " See also:pawn ") who with See also:spade, See also:axe and other implements, precedes an See also:army or smaller military See also:body, and clears or makes a road, digs intrenchments, prepares a camping ground, &c. The word is thus applied to all who, actually or figuratively, are first in exploring or working an undiscovered or undeveloped See also:country or See also:field of inquiry.
