PIOMBINO , a seaport of See also:Tuscany, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Pisa, 8 m. by See also:rail W.S.W. of Campiglia Marittima (which is 53 M. S.S.E. of Pisa), 62 ft. above See also:sea-level, at the See also:southern extremity of the See also:peninsula of the See also:Monte Massoncello. Pop. (1901), 5979 (See also:town) ; 7 703 (See also:commune). It is surrounded by old walls, and contains some interesting See also:Renaissance See also:works by a See also:master of about 1458 under the See also:influence of See also:Alberti. It is the See also:port of embarcation for See also:Elba, the nearest point of which is about 6 in. to the See also:south-See also:west, and originally belonged to Pisa. It gives the See also:title of See also:prince to the Buoncompagni Ludovisi See also:family, who, however, no longer own it.
