PAWN . (I) A See also:pledge, an See also:object See also:left in the See also:charge of another, as See also:security for the repayment of See also:money See also:lent, for a See also:debt or for the performance of some See also:obligation (see See also:PAWNBROKING). The word is an See also:adaptation of O. Fr. See also:pan, pledge, See also:plunder, spoil. This has usually been identified with pan, from See also:Lat. pannus, piece of See also:cloth. The See also:Teutonic words for pledge—such as Du. pand, Ger. Pfand have been also traced to the same source; on the other See also:hand these Teutonic forms have been connected with the word which appears in O. Eng. as pending, a See also:penny, Ger. Pfennig, but this too has been referred to pannus. (2) The smallest piece on the chessboard. This, in its See also:early forms, poun, pown, &c., is taken from Fr. peon or paon, variants of peon, Med.
