PIOTRKOW , a See also:

town of See also:Russian See also:Poland, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, and formerly the seat of the high See also:court of Poland, on the railway from See also:Warsaw to See also:Vienna, 90 m. See also:south-See also:west of the former and 5 in. west of the See also:river Pilica. Pop. (1900), 32,173. It is a well-kept town, with numerous gardens, and has See also:flour-See also:mills, saw-mills, tanneries, agricultural machinery See also:works, and breweries. One of the See also:oldest towns in Poland, Piotrkow was in the 15th and 16th centuries the See also:place of See also:meeting of the diets, and here the See also:kings were elected. In the 14th See also:century Casimir the See also:Great built here a See also:castle (now a military See also:church) and surrounded the town with walls. Here in 1769 the Russians defeated the (See also:Polish) forces of the See also:Bar See also:Confederation.
