FORTY , the See also:

cardinal number equal to four tens. The word is derived from the 0. Eng. feowertig, a See also:combination of fakeer, four, and tig, an old See also:form of " ten," used as a suffix, cf. Icel. tiu, See also:Dan. ti, ten, and Ger. vierzig, forty. The name " The Forty " has been given to various bodies composed of that number of members, particularly to a judicial See also:body in See also:ancient See also:Athens, who tried small cases in the rural districts, and to a See also:court of criminal See also:jurisdiction and two See also:civil See also:appeal courts in the Venetian See also:republic. The See also:French See also:Academy (see See also:ACADEMIES) has also been known as " The Forty " or " The Forty Immortals." The See also:period just before the See also:repeal of the See also:corn See also:laws in the See also:United See also:Kingdom is frequently alluded to, particularly by the See also:free See also:trade school, as the " hungry forties "; and the " roaring forties " is a sailor's name for the' stormy region between the 4oth and 50th latitudes N. and S., but more particularly applied to the portion of the See also:north See also:Atlantic lying between those latitudes.
