KRAAL , also spelt craal, kraut, &c. (See also:

South See also:African Dutch, derived possibly from a native African word, but probably from the See also:Spanish See also:corral, Portuguese curral, an enclosure for horses, See also:cattle and the like), in South and Central See also:Africa, a native See also:village surrounded by a palisade, mud See also:wall or other See also:fencing roughly circular in See also:form; by transference, the community living within the enclosure. Folds for animals and enclosures made specially for defensive purposes are also called kraals.
