LUGOS , the See also:

capital of the See also:county of Krass6-Szoreny, See also:Hungary, 225 M. S.E. of See also:Budapest by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 16,126. It is situated on both See also:banks of the See also:river Temes, which divides the See also:town in two quarters, the Rumanian on the right and the See also:German on the See also:left See also:bank. It is the seat of a See also:Greek-See also:United (Rumanian) See also:bishop. Lugos carries on an active See also:trade in See also:wine, and has 'several important fairs, while the surrounding See also:country, which is mountainous and well-wooded, produces large quantities of grapes and plums. Lugos was once a strongly fortified See also:place and of greater relative importance than at See also:present. It was the last seat of the Hungarian revolutionary See also:government (See also:August 1849), and the last resort of See also:Kossuth and several other leaders of the See also:national cause, previous to their See also:escape to See also:Turkey.
