MANCIPLE , the See also:

official See also:title of the caterer at a See also:college, an See also:inn of See also:court, or other institution. Sometimes also the See also:chief See also:cook. The See also:medieval Latin manceps, formed from mancipium, acquisition by See also:purchase (see See also:ROMAN See also:LAW), meant a purchaser of stores, and mancipium became used of his See also:office. It is from the latter word that the O. Fr. manciple is taken.
