MOAT , a ditch filled with See also:

water surrounding a See also:castle, See also:town or other fortified See also:place for purposes of See also:defence. The word is taken from the O. Fr. mote, or motte, a See also:mound or See also:embankment of See also:earth used as a means of defence; the transition in meaning from the heap of earth to the See also:trench See also:left by excavating the earth is parallel with the similar interchange of meaning in See also:dike and ditch (see DIxE). In mod. Fr. motte means a lump or clod of earth. The word is probably of See also:Teutonic origin, and may be connected with Eng.
