MORVAN , an elevated region forming the See also:northern continuation of the central See also:plateau of See also:France, and extending over a large See also:part of the See also:department of See also:Nievre, and over portions of those of See also:Yonne, Cote-d'Or and See also:Saone-et-See also:Loire. Its See also:area is a little over r000 sq. m. The See also:average See also:elevation is about 1600 ft., the culminating point the Bois-du-Roi, attaining 2959 ft. It is traversed by the Yonne, which has its source on Mt Prenelay (2789 ft)., by the Cure and by several affluents of the Arroux. Geologically it consists chiefly of See also:gneiss and See also:granite. It contains much See also:good pasturage and is abundantly wooded, the exploitation of its forests affording employment to large See also:numbers of the inhabitants.
