NAPHTALI , in the See also:Bible, the name of an Israelite tribe, the " son " of See also:Jacob by Bilhah, See also:Rachel's maid, and the uterine See also:brother of See also:Dan (Gen. See also:xxx. 8). It See also:lay to the See also:south of Dan in the eastern See also:half of upper See also:Galilee (Josh. xix. 32-39), a fertile mountainous See also:district (cf. Gen. xlix. 21; Dent. xxxiii. 23), open to the surrounding influences of See also:Phoenicia and See also:Aram. Apart from its See also:share in the See also:war against Sisera (Judg. iv. seq., see See also:DEBORAH), little is known of it. It evidently suffered in the bloody conflicts of See also:Damascus with See also:Israel (I See also:Kings xv. 2o), and was depopulated by Tiglath-Pileser IV. (2 Kings xv. 29; Isa. ix. I). ' Naphtali and Dan are " See also:brothers," perhaps partly on See also:geographical grounds, but Dan also had a seat in the south (south-See also:west of See also:Ephraim), and the name of the " See also:mother " Bilhah is apparently connected with Bilhan, an Edomite and also a Benjamite name (Gen. See also:xxxvi. 27; I Chron. vii. so). For the view connecting Naphtali (perhaps a geographical rather than a tribal See also:term), or rather its Israelite inhabitants, with the south see the full discussion by H. W. See also:Hogg, Ency. Bib. iii. See also:col. 3332 sqq• with references. Additional information and CommentsThere are no comments yet for this article.
