NAWAB , a See also:Mahommedan See also:title for a native ruler in See also:India, answering to the See also:Hindu See also:raja. Nawab originally means a See also:deputy, being the honorific plural of the Arabic naib, and it was applied to a delegate of a supreme See also:chief, the See also:viceroy or See also:governor under the See also:Great See also:Mogul, e.g. the nawab of Oudh. From this use it became a title of See also:rank, without See also:office, and is now sometimes conferred by the See also:British See also:government on Mahommedan gentlemen for distinguished service.
