NUSHKI , a See also:town and See also:district of See also:Baluchistan. The town lies ,-o M. See also:south-See also:west of See also:Quetta, and is situated in a See also:plain at the See also:base of the Quetta See also:plateau, 2900 ft. above the See also:sea. Pop. (1901) 644. From this point the See also:flat Baluchistan See also:desert stretches away northwards and westwards to the See also:Helmund See also:river. The See also:administration of the Nushki district was taken over from the See also:khan of See also:Kalat by the See also:Indian See also:government in 1896, and was leased from him on a perpetual quit See also:rent in 1899. In 1902 a railway of 91 M. was sanctioned from Quetta to Nushki, which was com-pleted in 1905. This railway makes Nushki the starting-point of the See also:caravan route to See also:Seistan. From the strategic point of view a force operating from Nushki would flank any advance from the See also:north on See also:Kandahar, and would also guard the south-west approach to the fortress of Quetta.
