PALMETTO , in See also:

botany, a popular name for Sabal Palmetto, the Palmetto See also:palm, a native of the See also:southern See also:United States, especially in See also:Florida. It has an erect See also:stem, 20 to 8o ft. high and deeply cut See also:fan-shaped leaves, 5 to 8 ft. See also:long; the See also:fruit is a See also:black drupe a to i in. long. The trunks make See also:good piles for wharves, &c., as the See also:wood resists the attacks of borers; the leaves are used for thatching. The palm is grown as a pot-plant in greenhouses.
