PASTORAL See also:LETTER , an open letter addressed by a See also:bishop to the See also:clergy or laity of his See also:diocese, or to both, containing either See also:general admonition, instruction or See also:consolation, or directions for behaviour in particular circumstances. In the See also:Catholic See also:Church such letters are also sent out regularly at particular ecclesiastical seasons, particularly at the beginning of fasts. In the non-episcopal See also:Protestant churches the name "pastoral letter " is given to any open letter addressed by a pastor to his See also:congregation, but more especially to that customarily issued at certain seasons, e.g. by the See also:moderator of a Presbyterian See also:assembly or the chairman of a Congregational or Baptist See also:union.
