PILLION , a See also:light See also:saddle without See also:pommel or See also:bow, especially a See also:pad fastened to the back of an See also:ordinary saddle, as a seat for another See also:person, generally a woman. Pillions were also used to support baggage. They were in See also:common use from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The word appears to have been adapted into See also:English from the Irish pillin, See also:cushion, formed from See also:Lat. pellis, skin. In the sense of a See also:hat worn by a See also:priest or See also:doctor of divinity, " pillon " or " pylion " occurs in the 15th and 16th centuries.
