RAND , a Dutch word meaning border, edge, used in See also:

South See also:Africa to designate a See also:low rounded range of hills; specifically it is an abbreviated See also:form of Witwatersrand, an elevated See also:ridge in the See also:southern See also:Transvaal, forming the See also:water-parting between the basins of the See also:Orange and See also:Limpopo. The Rand is famous for its See also:gold-bearing reefs (see GOLD), and the word is often used as a synonym for the See also:mining See also:industry carried on over a See also:great See also:part of its See also:area, or for See also:Johannesburg (q.v.), the See also:city which that industry created.
