Nor. rif, possibly a transferred sense of rif, rib), a See also:part of a See also:sail which can be rolled or folded up, thus diminishing the amount of See also:canvas spread to the See also:wind. In square sails, " reefs " are taken from the See also:top, in fore-and-aft sails from the See also:foot.
