RESPONDENT (from See also:Lat. respondere, to See also:answer) , strictly, one who answers; in See also:law one called upon to answer a See also:petition or other proceeding. In a matrimonial cause the See also:defendant in the suit is called the respondent. The defendant to a See also:quarter sessions See also:appeal is called the respondent, and so generally in appeals is the party, whether See also:plaintiff or defendant, against whom the appeal is brought.
