RHATANY or KRAMERIA See also:

ROOT, in See also:medicine, the dried root either of See also:Para rhatany or of Peruvian rhatany. The See also:action of rhatany is due to the rhatania-tannic See also:acid, and resembles that of tannic acid, being a powerful astringent. An infusion is used as a gargle for, relaxed throats; and lozenges, particularly those containing rhatany and See also:cocaine, are usefulin similar cases. Like tannic acid, the powdered See also:extract may be applied as a See also:local haemostatic. All preparations of rhatany taken internally are powerful astringents in See also:diarrhoea and intestinal See also:haemorrhage.
