SCIMITAR , the See also:

term generally used of all See also:oriental single-edged curved or See also:crescent-shaped swords (see See also:SWORD). The word has appeared in a variety of forms in See also:English, due to Fr. cimetare, It. scimitarra or Span. cimitarra; it has even been corrupted into " smyter," as if connected with " smite." Most probably it represents an See also:early Western corruption of the See also:Persian word for a sabre, shamshir or shimshir, which means literally " See also:lion's claw " (slier, lion, in Hindustani " See also:tiger," and sham, See also:nail, claw).
