SHAH ALAM (1728-1806) , See also:Mogul See also:emperor of See also:Delhi, son of Alamgir II., was See also:born on the 15th of See also:June 1728, and was originally known as the Shahzada All Gohar. Being proclaimed a See also:rebel by his See also:father, he fled to Shuja-ud-Dowlah, See also:wazir of Oudh, and on the See also:death of his father in 1759 assumed the name of Shah Alam. He joined Shuja-ud-Dowlah against the See also:British, but after his defeat at the See also:battle of See also:Buxar, he sought British See also:protection. In 1765 he granted the diwani (superintendence of the See also:revenue) of See also:Bengal to See also:Lord See also:Clive for the See also:East See also:India See also:Company in return for a See also:payment of 26 lakhs a See also:year. In 1771 he See also:fell into the See also:power of the See also:Mahrattas, was installed emperor of Delhi, and lost the British See also:subsidy. In 1788 the See also:Rohilla See also:chief Ghulam Kadir seized Delhi and put out Shah Alam's eyes. Sindhia restored him to the See also:throne, and after the Mahratta See also:war of 1803 he was again taken under British protection. He died on the loth of See also:November 18o6. See W.
