SIERADZ , a See also:town of, See also:Russian See also:Poland, in the See also:government of See also:Kalisz, situated on the Warta, r to m. S.W. of the See also:city of See also:Warsaw. Pop. (1897) 7019. It is one of the See also:oldest towns of Poland, founded See also:prior to the introduction of See also:Christianity, and was formerly known as See also:Syra or Syraz. The See also:annals mention it in 1139. Several seines, or diets, of Poland were held there during the 13th to 15th centuries, and it was a wealthy town until nearly destroyed by a See also:fire in 1447. The old See also:castle, which suffered much in the See also:Swedish See also:war of 1702–1711, was destroyed by the Germans in 1800.
