SOLOLA , the See also:

capital of the See also:department of Solola, in See also:Guatemala; on the See also:northern See also:shore of See also:lake See also:Atitlan, 46 m. W.N.W. of Guatemala See also:city. Pop. (1905), about 17,000. Solola is the See also:ancient capital of the See also:Cakchiquel See also:Indians, who See also:form the bulk of the See also:population. In the city coarse See also:cloth, pottery, cigars and See also:soap are manufactured, and there is a large See also:prison and reformatory. Among the surrounding mountains are large and successful See also:coffee plantations, owned by See also:German settlers. On the 18th of See also:April 1902 Solola was wrecked by an See also:earthquake, but as most of the houses were constructed of See also:wood it was speedily rebuilt.
