SPANISH See also:BROOM , a handsome See also:shrub with See also:long switch-like See also:green few-leaved or leafless branches and large yellow sweet-scented papilionaceous See also:flowers. It is a member of the See also:Pea See also:family (See also:Leguminosae), and known botanically as Spartium junceum. It is a native of the Mediterranean region and the See also:Canary Islands, and is often cultivated. The whole plant, but especially the See also:flower shoots and seeds (herby et semen genistae his panicae vel junceae), have a See also:bitter See also:taste and tonic and diuretic properties, and were formerly used medicinally. The See also:fibres of the See also:young stems were used in making nets, carpets, mats, baskets, &c.
