TAMAQUA , a See also:

borough of Schuylkill See also:county, See also:Pennsylvania, U.S.A., on the Tamaqua (Little Schuylkill) See also:river, about 20 M. above its junction with the Schuylkill, about 17 M. E.N.E. of See also:Pottsville, and about 98 m. N. of See also:Philadelphia. Pop. (189o) 6054; (1900) 7267, (625 See also:foreign-See also:born); (191o) 9462. Tamaqua is served by the Central railroad of New See also:Jersey, by the Philadelphia and See also:Reading railway and by an electric See also:line connecting with Mauch Chunk, Pottsville, and other places. Tamaqua is in a See also:rich See also:anthracite See also:coal See also:district, and coal-See also:mining is its See also:chief See also:industry. Among manufactures are foundry and See also:machine-See also:shop products, See also:powder, stoves, See also:furniture, See also:hosiery, &c. The borough owns the See also:water-See also:works. The first See also:settlement here was made in 1799 and anthracite coal was discovered in 1817. In 1829 Tamaqua was laid out and received its See also:present name, an See also:Indian word meaning " See also:running water. " It was incorporated as a borough in 1833.

Between 1869 and 1875 the Molly Maguires were active here.
