VINDHYA , a range of mountains in Central See also:

India. It forms a well-marked, though not quite continuous, See also:chain across India, separating the See also:Ganges See also:basin from the See also:Deccan. Starting on the See also:west in See also:Gujarat, the Vindhyas See also:cross See also:Malwa and the central portions of India, until their easternmost spurs abut on the valley of the Ganges at See also:Rajmahal. They thus roughly See also:form the See also:northern See also:side of the triangle, of which the other two sides are the Eastern and Western See also:Ghats. They have an See also:elevation of '1500 to 4500 ft., nowhere exceeding 5000 ft. Geologically they give their name to the " Vindhyan formation," one of the recognized See also:rock systems of India. In legendary tradition they formed the demarcating See also:line between the Madyadesha or See also:middle See also:land of the See also:Sanskrit invaders and the non-See also:Aryan Deccan, and they are still largely inhabited by aboriginal races such as the See also:Bhils.
