VINDELICIA , in See also:

ancient See also:geography, a See also:country bounded on the S. by See also:Raetia, on the N. by the See also:Danube and the Valium Hadriani, on the E. by the Oenus (See also:Inn), on the W. by the territory of the See also:Helvetii. It thus corresponded to the N.E. portion of See also:Switzerland, the S.E. of See also:Baden, and the S. of Wiirttemberg and See also:Bavaria. Together with the neighbouring tribes it was subjugated by Tiberius in 15 B.C., and towards the end of the 1st See also:century A.D. was made See also:part of Raetia (q.v.). Its See also:chief See also:town was See also:Augusta Vindelicorum (See also:Augsburg). Its in-habitants were probably of See also:Celtic origin (cf. the recurrence of Vind- in other Celtic names—Vindobona, Vindonissa); some authorities, however, regard them as See also:German. According to Dio See also:Cassius (liv. 22) they were an agricultural See also:people, and later writers (e.g. Isidorus, Origines, i. 4), describe the country as very fertile.
